From time to time, all of us get stuck in stinkin’ thinkin’ that gets in the way of who we want to be. Sometimes, it’s in the moment. Other times, those negative thoughts linger, causing us to feel like there’s no way out.
When that happens to me, I remember something my parents taught me when I was growing up: it’s a simple, catchy, and easy-to-remember way to reset our thoughts, to push out that negative mindset, and get unstuck.
It’s called ‘Cancel Cancel,’ and it really works!
I grew up with ‘Cancel Cancel’ in every aspect of my life. When my mom or dad heard me say something like, “Ugh! I can’t believe I was so stupid!” They would come back with: “Cancel cancel, you’re smart!”
They were so good about using this to help me redirect negative thoughts and affirm who I really was, that I began to do it too. I’m so grateful, because, even today, that stinkin’ thinkin’ still creeps in. Something will happen, I will make a mistake, miss a commitment, or fail… Then, in my head, I hear: “How could you be so dumb!” or “What’s wrong with you, Trish!”
Yep, it’s still there. And it’s not alone. On the other side of those negative words is, ‘Cancel cancel!’ It still works as well as it did when I was younger. I’m able to refocus, get unstuck, and be who I want to be in that moment.
So, here’s my invitation for you today:
Listen for some of the stinkin’ thinkin’ you hear around you. Listen to your family, friends, and coworkers, people at the store or restaurant, wherever you find yourself. Become more aware of what they are saying… and of what you are saying to yourself.
“Oh, I can’t believe I’m so stupid!”
“I’m so dumb!”
“What’s wrong with me?”
“I’m an idiot!”
You may have been saying some of those things to yourself your whole life. Whatever those words may be, try this today: When they come bubbling up, ‘Cancel cancel!’
It’s kinda cool. It’s kinda catchy too. Try it out, see how it goes, and let me know what happens.
Trapped by negativity? Here’s a way out.
There’s a lot of negativity in the world today, and, sometimes, it feels like there’s no escape from the constant stream of criticism, cynicism and complaining. We see it on TV, in the news, hear it on the radio, read it online and on social media … and, often, hear...
How “why” creates greater opportunities for success
Someone said, the first thing you need to do, if you want to succeed … is fail. While it doesn’t make us feel much better when we’re struggling, there’s certainly some truth to that. Most people who achieve any level of success have pushed through failures. They’ve...
Answer this question to transform the way you lead
When you are considering a project or setting a goal, doesn’t matter what it is, which question is more important: how or why? You may be thinking, come on, Trish, that’s a trick question. They’re both important. You don’t get one without the other. Yes, that’s...
The best way to be right
You’re right, you know you are. The facts as you understand them fully support your position. Your perspective makes so much more sense. How do they not see that? What is so wrong with their thinking that they don’t seem able to connect the dots you see so clearly?If...
How well do you listen? Rate yourself!
Ever run up against someone who seems to think they have it all figured out? No matter what you ask, they have an answer. No matter what you believe, they have a better explanation. Frustrating, right? Well, sooner or later, most of us realize, on some given issue or...
How our truth limits our value
Have you ever wondered why some folks just don’t seem to understand something that’s “so obvious” to you? No matter how hard you try, no matter how much logic you employ or how articulate your argument is, they just don’t seem to “get it.” Your heart is in the right...
Curiosity and other ways to conquer fear
At its core, curiosity is about learning truth rather than assuming truth, seeking new information rather than letting the past define us…
How influential leaders earn trust
Ask most people how to earn trust and expect to hear something along the lines of “keep your word…” or “live up to expectations…” While these are important aspects of building trust in any relationship, these are not the only ways to earn and maintain trust. Consider,...
This key shift will help you become a more influential leader
Sometimes, leadership feels harder than it should be. Certain things need doing, your team is clear on the objective, and those action items still aren’t getting done. Even when they are, you can feel the lack of enthusiasm for the work. Sometimes it manifests as...
